Artist's Description
A Feast for the Eyes, a Cedar Waxwing photograph created by Chris Scroggins at Cromwell Valley Park, Md. Copyright 2023.
.....
A vertical portrait of a photogenic Cedar Waxwing perching on a branch of bush honeysuckle dripping with red berries. In Autumn many kinds of birds take advantage of berries as a source of high protein, which will ready them for migration. On this day, after consuming a lot of berries, this individual stopped to rest and digest. This offered us us a wonderful opportunity to study the bird while it sat out in the open.
…..
Waxwings typically gorge on berries when they find them. This is why it is important to plant native shrubs, or at least those that won’t kill the birds. If you have Nandina on your property, the bird experts ask that you remove it. Nandina berries will kill the Waxwings!
