Horizontal color image of a male elk in a summer meadow with antlers in velvet. Elk shed their antlers each year. Elk are one of the largest mammals in North America and they become quite dangerous during their breeding season, called the rut. Females are also highly protective of their calves and close distances are to be avoided.
