Description

A Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) hovers mid-air with its sparkling, emerald green-feathered wings outstretched, set against a soft-focus background. Below there are hints of their favorite red summer garden flowers called Pentas, adding a splash of color to the scene. In Maryland this species of hummingbird migrates south in September. The departure is weather dependent and those who befriend these dainty creatures never know what day they will leave: one day they are still gorging on sugar water provided by their avid fans, and suddenly they vanish, like a person who leaves a party without saying goodbye! When I created this photo I knew the little one would be leaving soon. Created in my container garden in Central Maryland, USA.
