Horizontal. color photograph of a young Sperm Whale's tail flukes dripping with water prior to a deep dive for food. Sperm whales are frequently found in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of the Azores Islands, Portugal. Sperm whales are the largest carnivores on earth and do deep dives to the ocean floor to find various types of squid, which is their main food source. The whales send out sonar signals using the spermicetti organ located inside their skull and receive the feedback from the prey animals through the whale's lower jaw bone which is connected to the Sperm whale's inner ear. Increased military sonar testing is of great concern as all whales are very sensitive to sound pollution and depend on their own hearing to find food and others of their own kind. It's been said, "a deaf whale is a dead whale".
