Will he make it? Fact: today, fewer than 21,000 wild lions remain in all of Africa. Over decades, trophy hunters have targeted the biggest, strongest male lions. If the alpha male lion is killed, a pride of female lions and their cubs are in immediate danger. They are vulnerable to attack by other predators such as hyenas and other male lions looking to take over a pride. These new males will come into a pride and kill the young cubs which forces the females into estrus. It has been rightly argued that the removal of the large males greatly weakens the gene pool.
